On October 17, 2019, the Superior General of the Society of St. Eugene de Mazenod (SDM) and his dedicated team were elected in the morning, marking a new chapter in the Society’s mission. Later that same evening, the young Society faced the profound loss of their beloved founder, Fr. Gerard Francis OMI, who had been hospitalized for the past four days. This unexpected passing not only left a significant void but also placed a heightened responsibility on the newly elected leaders, who were called to navigate the Society through this challenging time.
In the wake of this bittersweet transition, the team reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to uphold the values and vision of St. Eugene de Mazenod. With hearts full of love and steadfast resolve, they embraced their roles as shepherds of the community, vowing to embody the founder’s legacy of compassion and service. Their leadership stands as a beacon of hope, guiding the Society to continue reaching out to the most marginalized and loving the unloved. This profound moment of unity reminds them that the spirit of Fr. Gerard Francis OMI lives on in each of them, inspiring their every action as they take on the mantle of leadership with humility, dedication, and faith.
SUPERIOR GENERAL
After the sudden demise of Rev. Fr. Gerard Francis OMI on 17.10.2019, the SDM members assembled under the guidance of Most. Rev. Dr. Neethinathan, the bishop of Chingelput and Patron of SDM. We, the perpetual members of Society elected Rev. Fr. Antonysamy SDM as our first Superior General. He was born on 01.06.1974 in Aranthangi in the diocese of Thanjavur. After his schooling, he joined in The society of SDM and was ordained priest on 21st December 2006 by Rev. Dr. Neethinathan. He was appointed as Assistant Parish Priest in different dioceses, namely Madras, Chingleput and Dindigul. Afterwards, he was appointed as a correspondent and principal of St. Anne English Medium School in Varadayapalam, Andrapradesh. After 3 years in the school, he went to Canada as a missionary to work in the Archdiocese of Boniface. He was elected as our first Superior General of SDM, after the sudden death of founder Fr. Gerard Francis OMI.
